Boston Red Sox Seek Wild Card Boost Against Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field

by EarlยทSeptember 15, 2026

The opening number told one story. The current number tells another โ€” and the gap between them is where this game gets interesting.

Texas opened Tuesday's series opener at Globe Life Field as a +106 home underdog, with Boston at -124. The market's first read was a near coin-flip with a slight lean to the road club. By first pitch that read had been obliterated: the Rangers sat at -130, and the run line flipped from Texas +1.5 to Texas -1.5. That is a 236-cent moneyline swing and a three-run move on the spread, and it happened for one reason โ€” Jacob deGrom's name sitting across from Patrick Sandoval's record.

The total moved the other way, from 8.5 down to 7.5. That split signal matters. Money pushed the side on the pitching mismatch while the number itself got shorter, which is not how a blowout is priced.

Earl's model is not buying the blowout. Our model projects a 4.1โ€“3.9 Boston win, a margin of -0.18 runs, and its highest-EV play on the board is Boston +1.5 at 21.42, with Boston on the moneyline at 19.12. The Over 7.5 is the model's lean, but at a negative expected value of -5.04 โ€” a probability tilt, not a priced edge.

The Mismatch on Paper

PitcherRecordERAWHIPK/9BB/9K/BB
Jacob deGrom (R)10-93.801.0811.212.294.89
Patrick Sandoval (L)1-54.581.769.334.422.11

deGrom's rate stats remain elite: 11.21 strikeouts per nine, 2.29 walks per nine, a 4.89 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 149.1 innings. He still misses bats and he still commands the zone. But a 3.80 ERA against a 1.08 WHIP tells you sequencing and the long ball have cost him โ€” 19 home runs allowed in those 149.1 innings, in a park that plays 106 for home runs.

Now look at the results, because this is where the -130 starts to look expensive:

  • Sept. 10 vs. SEA โ€” Texas 3, Seattle 4 (loss)
  • Sept. 5 vs. TB โ€” Texas 3, Tampa Bay 6 (loss)
  • Aug. 31 vs. OAK โ€” Texas 8, Oakland 1 (win)
  • Aug. 25 vs. CWS โ€” Texas 7, White Sox 11 (loss)
  • Aug. 20 vs. WSH โ€” Texas 2, Washington 0 (win)

Texas has averaged 4.6 runs scored across those five starts and gone 2-3. This is a 74-76 club with a -44 run differential that can lose a game in which it scores seven. That is the entire argument against laying -1.5 with the Rangers, and it has nothing to do with deGrom.

Sandoval Is a Trap in Both Directions

Sandoval's surface line is ugly: 1.76 WHIP, 11.45 hits per nine, 27 walks in 55 innings. But he is not a soft-toss mop-up arm. He strikes out 9.33 per nine โ€” the damage is contact and traffic, not a lack of stuff. Against a Texas lineup scoring 4.16 runs per game, traffic usually converts.

The counterweight is run support. Boston has scored 1, 3, 0, 3 and 3 runs in Sandoval's five most recent starts โ€” 2.0 runs per game โ€” and gone 1-4 in them. That is the honest risk in the model's Boston lean. The model's 4.1-run projection is a bet that Boston's season-long 4.42 runs per game is more predictive than a five-start sample.

There's a structural point underneath all of this: Sandoval is starting because Boston's rotation is gutted. Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford, Johan Oviedo, Zack Kelly, Eduardo Rivera, Justin Slaten and Tyron Guerrero are all on the IL. Texas is just as thin โ€” Chris Martin, Jack Leiter, Cole Winn, Peyton Gray, Jose Corniell, Carter Baumler and Jalen Beeks are all down, with Kyle Higashioka and Michael Helman out on the position side.

Both offenses are depleted, too. Boston is missing Triston Casas, Anthony Seigler, Curtis Mead, Ceddanne Rafaela, Eli White and Masataka Yoshida โ€” which is precisely why the total dropped from 8.5 to 7.5, and why the model's 7.95 projection sits barely above the number.

What Earl's Model Is Actually Buying

  • Boston +1.5 โ€” EV 21.42 (strongest play on the board)
  • Boston moneyline +110 โ€” EV 19.12
  • Over 7.5 โ€” EV -5.04 (lean only, no value)

The logic is straightforward. The model's projected margin is -0.18 runs. The market, at Texas -130, is implying a 56-plus percent win probability for the home side, and pricing Boston at +110 (roughly 47.6% implied). When a model says coin flip and the market says 56/44, the value sits with the underdog. That is why BOS +1.5 carries the largest edge โ€” in a game the model views as a toss-up, laying a run and a half with the inferior team is the wrong side of the number.

The Over lean is real but thin. Globe Life Field plays to a 102 overall park factor with a 106 home run factor, the roof is retractable, and deGrom has been homer-prone. But the model's expected value on the number is negative. Translation: lean, don't load.

The Angle the Public Is Missing

Boston is 44-31 on the road (.587). Texas is 40-32 at home (.556). The Red Sox are a better road team than the Rangers are a home team โ€” and the season-long gap in run differential is enormous: Boston +88, Texas -44. That's a 132-run separation in underlying quality, and the market still made Texas a -130 favorite.

Boston's turnaround this season has been credited largely to its mid-season managerial change, and the club is playing out the year without Kristian Campbell, whose 2026 season is over after another injury. None of that changes the run differential.

The public is pricing a name and a won-loss record. It is not pricing the 132-run differential gap, Boston's road record, or the fact that Texas has dropped three of deGrom's last five starts while scoring 4.6 runs per game in them.

How to Bet It

  • Primary: Boston Red Sox +1.5. The model's top EV at 21.42. This is the cleanest number on the board.
  • Secondary: Boston Red Sox moneyline +110. Plus money on a game the model grades as a coin flip is the best price-to-probability gap available.
  • Total: Over 7.5, small or pass. The model leans Over, but -5.04 EV means you're paying for it.
  • Avoid: Texas -1.5. You are laying a run and a half with a sub-.500 team that has a negative run differential and a bullpen held together with tape.

The market moved 236 cents on reputation. Earl's model moved on the math โ€” and the math says the value is on the visitors.
