Tampa Bay Rays, Cleveland Guardians Open ALCS With Arms Race
Tropicana Field has hosted plenty of strange October baseball under its catwalks, but Monday night's ALCS opener sets up as something rarer: a genuine old-fashioned pitching matchup between two clubs that got here on the strength of their rotations, not their lineups. The Tampa Bay Rays went 101-64 and posted the American League's best home record at 57-26. The Cleveland Guardians scrapped to 88-79 and won 46 games on the road. The market has settled on Tampa Bay at -164 with a 6.5 total, and that number has not budged from open to current โ a tell worth unpacking before first pitch.
The Matchup on the Mound
| Drew Rasmussen (R) | Foster Griffin (L) | |
|---|---|---|
| Record | 16-5 | 15-6 |
| ERA | 2.67 | 3.60 |
| WHIP | 0.91 | 1.21 |
| Innings | 172.0 | 172.2 |
| K/BB | 5.44 | 3.51 |
| xERA | 3.06 | 4.35 |
Rasmussen's surface line is the best on either roster, and the underlying numbers mostly hold up. His expected ERA of 3.06 sits about four-tenths above his actual mark, but a 97th-percentile walk rate and an 87th-percentile xwOBA confirm this is a pitcher who simply does not give away free passes โ 32 walks in 172 innings, a 1.67 walks-per-nine. The one soft spot: his whiff rate sits in just the 49th percentile and his fastball velocity in the 69th. He is a command-and-mix artist, not a swing-and-miss monster.
That mix matters here. Rasmussen throws six pitches, four of them with positive run value. The sinker (23.8% usage) is his best weapon by run value per 100 (+2.6), the cutter (28.9%) and four-seamer (28.0%) both grade out above average, and the changeup โ used 13.3% of the time โ has held hitters to a .167 batting average and .167 slugging. If Cleveland's bats chase the changeup out of the zone, this gets ugly fast.
Griffin is the more interesting handicapping story because his ERA lies. His 3.60 earned run average comes with a 4.35 xERA โ a 0.75-run gap that is one of the larger divergences on the slate. His expected batting average allowed (.262) and expected slugging (.414) both run worse than the actuals, and his barrel rate sits in the 7th percentile of the league. He allowed 42 barrels on 508 batted balls, an 8.3% barrel rate, with a max exit velocity of 119 mph. Cleveland is starting a lefty whose contact quality allowed is among the worst in baseball.
How to Attack Griffin
The scouting report writes itself. Griffin's primary pitch is a cutter at 32.5% usage โ and it is his worst result. Opponents posted a .333 wOBA and .438 slugging off the cutter, with expected marks (.345 xwOBA, .462 xSLG) suggesting it should have been even worse. The curveball is a disaster: -3.7 run value per 100, a .429 wOBA and .613 slugging allowed. The sweeper has been tagged for a .341 wOBA.
Where Griffin survives is on the changeup (.280 wOBA), sinker (.298) and split-finger (.197 on a .255 slugging). Those are three pitches with limited usage โ 11.5%, 10.3% and 5.6% respectively. Put simply: the Rays should hunt the cutter and the curveball and force Griffin to beat them with pitches he rarely throws.
The Line, the Total, and the Trap
The fact that -164 and 6.5 have not moved at all is meaningful. There is no steam, no injury-driven adjustment, and no sharp-side pressure either direction. When a line opens and holds flat in a marquee playoff game, it usually means the market and the models broadly agree on the shape of the game โ a low-scoring, coin-flip contest that the home team wins slightly more often than not.
That is essentially what our model says. Earl's model projects a 3.4-3.2 Rays win โ a margin of 0.15 runs and a total of 6.6. That is a game decided by a single swing, not a blowout, and it has real consequences for how you should bet it.
The flagship play is Cleveland +1.5. The model grades this as its highest-value position on the board at +16.65 expected value. When the projected margin is a fraction of a run, buying the run and a half with the underdog is the correct structural bet โ you win if Cleveland wins outright, and you win if Tampa Bay wins by one. That covers an enormous share of the realistic outcome distribution.
The moneyline is a different animal. Our model does side with Tampa Bay, but at -164 you are paying a steep tax for a team projected to win by 0.15 runs. The model's ML expected value comes in at -8.68 โ the side is right, the price is not. If you want the Rays, understand you are buying the better team at home with a superior starter, not buying value.
On the total, tread carefully. The model's lean is Over 6.5, but the projected total of 6.6 sits only a tenth of a run above the number โ and the model itself grades the Over at -8.52 EV. That is a "lean, not a play" situation. The supporting case is thin: Tropicana Field plays to a 95 park factor with a 92 home-run factor, the roof is closed, and both starters have recent form pointing toward a tight game. Rasmussen's last five starts produced team scores of 1-0, 6-1, 10-1, 3-1 and 6-3 โ the Rays' pitching has been so good that his own offense has barely needed to show up.
The Fatigue Variable Nobody Is Pricing
Cleveland's no-injury report cuts both ways. The Guardians are healthy on paper, but the recent-news file flags the real question hanging over this clubhouse: how much pitching is left after a taxing ALDS run that went the distance and wrapped Saturday. Griffin has not started since September 23, when he took a 1-0 loss to Boston โ a layoff that could mean a rested arm or a rusty one. His five most recent starts produced a 0-1 loss, a 7-6 win, a 5-9 loss, a 4-3 win and a 3-8 loss. That is a pitcher who has been alternating good and bad, with a curveball that has been hit hard all year.
Tampa Bay, meanwhile, carries six players on the 60-day injured list โ Gavin Lux, Jacob Melton, Edwin Uceta, Jonathan Heasley, Ryan Pepiot and Steven Wilson โ which is precisely why the rotation depth has been tested and Rasmussen has had to be this good. He has answered: 30 starts, a 4.66 WAR, and a 158.8 ERA+.
The Bottom Line
This is a game where the pitching gap is real but the margin is tiny, and the market has priced the favorite aggressively at -164 while leaving the run line and the underdog moneyline sitting there. The disciplined card is Cleveland +1.5 as the primary play, a small or pass on the Tampa Bay moneyline, and the Over as a lean only. If you are hunting a correlated angle, the most defensible stack is Cleveland +1.5 with the Under-adjacent logic of a low total โ but understand the model's total projection nudges the other way, and the number is too tight to attack. Take the run and a half. That is where the edge lives.
