Astros Outlast A's 7-5 in West Sacramento as Paredes and Butler Deliver at the Plate
The Houston Astros beat the Oakland Athletics 7-5 on Thursday night at Sutter Health Park, taking the series opener behind a four-RBI night from the middle of the order and a bullpen that held the line after a short start. The A's hung around all night, but Houston's bats did just enough to stay in front.
Our premium pick: We sold the Astros moneyline, and that cashed. The Houston side was the right call, and the game played out the way the urgency angle suggested.
Run line โ OAK +1.5: LOSS. We took the Athletics to lose by one, and Houston won by two. Close, but a miss.
Total โ Over: WIN. The game cleared the number, and both starters contributed to it. Peter Lambert lasted just 2.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits with two homers, while Mason Barnett went six innings and gave up four earned runs on four hits with two homers of his own.
Props:
- Isaac Paredes over 0.5 RBI (+117): WIN. Paredes homered among a 1-for-4 night with four total bases, one run and one RBI.
- Lawrence Butler over 1.5 total bases (+130): WIN. Butler went 3-for-5 with four total bases, the A's best bat on the night.
- Yordan Alvarez over 1.5 total bases (-152): LOSS. Alvarez finished 1-for-4 with one total base, falling a base short.
- Yainer Diaz over 1.5 total bases (-153): LOSS. Diaz went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and never got going.
The takeaway: the side and total read the game correctly, but the run line and the two Houston bats we leaned on didn't follow the script. Barnett's ugly surface numbers didn't translate into the blowup we expected, and Houston's damage came from a different bat than the ones we highlighted. When a starter's profile screams regression but the game stays close, the value sits with the side and total โ not the star-prop stack.
