Braves Fall to Marlins 5-3 in Season Finale as Premium Card Goes 1-2

The Braves closed out the 2026 regular season with a 5-3 loss to the Marlins at loanDepot park on Sunday, a game with nothing at stake for Atlanta beyond staying healthy before Tuesday's wild-card round. Miami's home form and the pitching matchup did the rest.

The premium pick: one win, two losses. We took Miami on the moneyline, and that cashed โ€” the Marlins won outright by two runs. The run line did not: we had Atlanta +1.5, and that margin flipped it to a loss. The total also went the wrong way, with the over losing as the game finished at eight runs. One win, two losses on the card.

The arms told the story. Janson Junk was better than his record suggested โ€” 4.2 innings, one earned run, three hits, five strikeouts and a single walk โ€” which undercut the contact-over-power angle we liked against him. JR Ritchie gave Atlanta 5.2 innings but allowed four earned runs on seven hits and two walks. Sandy Alcantara, pulled from his final turn as a starter, worked a clean inning of relief with a strikeout. The Atlanta offense managed only three runs total, and Matt Olson finished 0-for-2 with a strikeout while Austin Riley went 0-for-3 with a walk.

The takeaway. Late-season games with a clinched playoff spot on one side are a different animal. Lineup motivation and bullpen usage are not the same as they are in July, and a pitcher's season-long profile can matter less than who is actually trying to win the game. That is worth carrying into October, when the stakes flip and the same lazy read runs in the opposite direction.
