Padres Sweep Cubs: Under Hits, Top-Order Bats Go Quiet
The Cubs' season ended at Petco Park on Wednesday, as San Diego completed a two-game wild-card sweep with a 4-1 win. Chicago's bats never found a rhythm, and the Padres' pitching staff did the rest.
Our premium card was built around Kevin Gausman's soft spots and a projected 7.09-run total. The market got the better of us on the side.
Moneyline (Cubs): LOSS. We took Chicago as a +116 underdog on a projected 3.6-3.4 win. Gausman lasted 3.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits with just one strikeout. The Cubs never led.
Run line (Cubs +1.5): LOSS. A one-run game would have covered it. The Padres won by three, so the cushion never mattered.
Total (Under): WIN. The under was the one clean read. The game landed at five runs, well under the 7.09-run projection, and Petco's pitcher-friendly profile played exactly as expected.
On the prop card, the hard-contact profiles mostly didn't translate. Fernando Tatis Jr. over 1.5 total bases finished with 0 TB. Jackson Merrill over 1.5 total bases got there with 2 TB, the one prop that cashed. Pete Crow-Armstrong over 1.5 total bases finished with 0 TB.
Takeaway: the under was the right side of this matchup, and the model's total was the most reliable output. When a pitcher's park and two starters with real swing-and-miss stuff line up, the run environment deserves more weight than individual batter splits โ a note worth carrying into the next playoff slate.
