The Marlins Went 80-82. Now Comes the $21 Million Decision
The most consequential Marlins news of the past week wasn't a game result โ the season is already over โ but a pair of decisions that will shape 2027. Per reporting from Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald, Miami does not plan to trade Sandy Alcantara this offseason. Per ESPN, president of baseball operations Peter Bendix has confirmed that manager Clayton McCullough will return next year while the club weighs Alcantara's $21MM club option, which can be declined in favor of a $2MM buyout.
That is the hinge of Miami's winter. Alcantara, 2026 being the final guaranteed year of his contract, authored a workload-heavy season: 13-11 with a 3.87 ERA, 214 innings and 153 strikeouts across 36 appearances (33 starts), with a 1.23 WHIP. He also kept rewriting the franchise record book โ becoming the club's career innings leader by passing Ricky Nolasco's 1,225 2/3 frames, and recording the 1,002nd strikeout of his Marlins tenure. For a rotation that leaned on him all summer, the $21MM question is really a question about the team's floor in 2027.
A Season That Split in Two
The final ledger reads 80-82 with a plus-3 run differential (715 scored, 712 allowed) โ the definition of a coin-flip club. But the shape of the season tells a louder story. A promising start was derailed by a franchise-record 12-game losing streak early in the summer, a skid that per The Athletic still left Miami in playoff contention after a 20-6 June. At the deadline, the Marlins sold more than they bought.
The near-miss matters for how you read the roster. MLB Trade Rumors' offseason outlook frames the short-term picture as "increasingly bright" thanks to breakthrough performances, and there's real substance behind that. Max Meyer was arguably the staff's best arm relative to opportunity: a 2.68 ERA and 9-1 record over 20 starts, with 121 strikeouts in 111 innings and a 1.14 WHIP. If Alcantara is retained, a top of the rotation built around those two is the most stable thing the organization has.
The Core Is Already Here
The position-player group also gave the front office reasons to stand pat. Otto Lopez hit .305 with 191 hits, 34 steals and nine triples in 157 games. Xavier Edwards posted a .360 on-base percentage with 21 steals. Kyle Stowers supplied thump โ 21 homers, 65 RBI โ though a .239 average and 161 strikeouts in 447 at-bats show how streaky that power can be. Jakob Marsee walked 78 times and swiped 23 bags, giving the lineup a second on-base-and-run element.
Collectively, Miami hit .250/.326/.404 with 150 home runs and 156 stolen bases. A bullpen that finished with a 3.62 ERA and a 1.187 WHIP held up better than the rotation's 4.13 mark suggests. Five arms โ William Kempner, Adam Mazur, Andrew Nardi, Robby Snelling and Ronny Henriquez โ ended the year on the 60-day injured list, and how much of that group returns healthy will determine how aggressive the Marlins need to be on the pitching market.
What It Means for 2027
Retaining McCullough โ who per ESPN has overseen the most wins over a two-season span since 2009-10 โ signals continuity over a reset. The Alcantara option is the harder call: paying $21MM for a pitcher who just threw 214 innings buys certainty at the top of the rotation, while the $2MM buyout buys flexibility. Either way, the reporting this week points the same direction: Miami's plan is to build on last season's breakthrough rather than tear it down again. For a team that finished two games under .500 with a positive run differential, that margin is exactly where small decisions become big ones.
