Cowboys at Eagles Week 7 Preview: Hurts Absence Reshapes Monday Night Matchup
Two 2-4 Teams, Two Very Different Kinds of Broken
Monday night at Lincoln Financial Field gives us a division game between a pair of 2-4 teams, but don't mistake symmetry in the standings for symmetry on the field. Philadelphia's season was detonated by the Jalen Hurts blood-clot diagnosis, and the Eagles have now dropped four straight. Dallas has lost two in a row and looked as bad doing it as the franchise has in years. The market has settled at Cowboys -4.5 with a 44.5 total, and neither number has moved a tick since open.
Our model isn't shy: Dallas 24, Philadelphia 17, with the Cowboys as the ATS and moneyline play at 57.7% confidence.
Philadelphia's Offense Is Running on Fumes
Start with the obvious. Tanner McKee is the quarterback, and through his first extended action he completed 57.8% for 215 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in a 25-14 loss to Carolina. Game-manager line, game-manager ceiling. That is the entire Eagles passing attack right now: 191.3 yards per game through the air, 29th in the league, on just 33.3 attempts.
The supporting cast is thinning by the hour. Dontayvion Wicks is out with an ankle โ he's been the most productive receiver on the roster at 47.3 yards per game โ and that leaves Darius Cooper, Makai Lemon and Dallas Goedert (knee, but a full participant) as McKee's options. Saquon Barkley is questionable with a hamstring after a full practice, and the Eagles need him badly: 30.3 rush yards per game at 5.1 a clip is the only efficiency on this side of the ball. The problem is volume โ 22.3 team rush attempts per game is a token run game, and 82.2 rush yards per game ranks 31st.
Philadelphia scores 17.7 points per game. Against a Dallas defense allowing 26.5, you'd expect more, but the Eagles' pace is slow (54.0 plays per game, fewest in this matchup) and the turnover profile is grim: 0.5 takeaways per game on defense, -0.2 turnover differential.
Dallas Moves the Ball and Punts Anyway
Here's the Cowboys paradox. They rank sixth in scoring at 25.2 per game and fourth in passing at 273.2 yards, with Dak Prescott sitting on 1,639 yards, 10 touchdowns, five picks and a 90.1 rating. And yet the last two weeks have been a slog: 54 attempts for 258 yards and a 65.2 passer rating against Green Bay, with 30 pressures, 25 hurries and five quarterback hits allowed across two games. Zero sacks is a Prescott mobility stat, not an offensive line stat.
The run game has effectively been abandoned โ Javonte Williams got 11 carries for 41 yards last week, and Dallas averages 76.0 rush yards per game (26th). When you're one-dimensional at 60.1% pass on 36.6 attempts, you're asking Prescott to be perfect behind a leaky front.
The good news: Philadelphia's defense allows 22.8 points per game but generates almost nothing โ 1.3 sacks and 0.5 takeaways per game. A pass rush that can't get home against a line that's been leaking is a recipe for CeeDee Lamb (8.0 catches, 96.2 yards per game) and George Pickens (5.5 for 71.3, shoulder, full practice) to eat against a secondary missing help. Lamb and Pickens saw 29 combined targets last week. That volume doesn't disappear.
What the Model Is Seeing
A seven-point projected margin against a 4.5-point spread is the whole story. The model likes Dallas to win by a converted touchdown in a game where one team has a functional passing offense and the other is starting a backup with a depleted receiver room.
One caution worth flagging for anyone shopping the moneyline: Dallas -230 implies roughly 69.7%, and the model's 57.7% confidence doesn't clear that bar. The spread is the cleaner vehicle; the moneyline is a tax you don't need to pay in a division game with a 4.5-point cushion available.
The projected score of 41 also sits under the 44.5 total, which lines up with Philadelphia's 54-play pace and 17.7 points per game. Neither defense generates takeaways (0.5 per game each), so don't bank on short fields to inflate this thing.
Situational and Injury Angles
Weather is a non-factor: 58 degrees, 5 mph wind, clear on grass in October. Both teams are on normal rest. It's a division and conference game, which historically keeps these things close โ the last ten meetings are 5-5, and Philadelphia swept 2024 by scores of 41-7 and 34-6 before the Cowboys took the 2025 Week 12 matchup 24-21. That history is a caution flag on laying points, but it was written with Hurts under center.
The injury ledger tilts Dallas. DeMarvion Overshown returns at linebacker after his first full practice, and Prescott gets his full receiver corps with Pickens and Tyler Guyton both practicing fully. Dallas loses KaVontae Turpin (ribs) and Dee Winters (calf), with Marist Liufau questionable.
Philadelphia's list is worse: Wicks out, Nolan Smith out (concussion), Cameron Williams out, plus Jonathan Greenard questionable after not practicing. Barkley's hamstring is the swing factor โ if he's limited, the Eagles have no engine.
Final Verdict
This is a bet against a broken offense more than a bet on a flawed favorite. Philadelphia has scored 14, 17, 20 and 7 points over its last four โ an average of 14.5 โ with a backup quarterback and its leading receiver out. Dallas, for all its offensive line problems, still ranks top-six in scoring and top-four in passing, and it faces a defense that generates 1.3 sacks and 0.5 takeaways per game. A flat line at 4.5 with no movement tells you the market isn't rushing to buy the home dog either.
Pick: Cowboys -4.5 (confidence 57.7%). Lean Under 44.5 off the 24-17 projection. Pass on the moneyline at -230 โ take the points you're being given for free.
