Jayden Daniels Is Healthy Again. Washington's Margin for Error Isn't.

The Washington Commanders opened 2026 the way they closed 2025 β€” close, and on the wrong side of it. A 24-22 loss at Lincoln Financial Field dropped them to 0-1, and the margin was as thin as the two-point conversion that never converted.

For 52 minutes, the story was Washington's defense holding Philadelphia in check. Then Jayden Daniels heated up late, hitting rookie receiver Antonio Williams for a touchdown with 1:01 remaining to pull within two. The Eagles survived the final stop. The Commanders got an ATS cover out of a game they lost β€” the line closed at Philadelphia -5.5, and Washington's 3.5-point ATS margin reflects a team that stayed inside the number all afternoon.

What Daniels' Return Actually Looked Like

Daniels' line was functional, not triumphant: 18-of-34 for 164 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, an 85.9 passer rating, plus 31 rushing yards on five carries. He was sacked once. That last number is the one that matters most given what Washington has been through up front.

The Commanders lost left tackle Laremy Tunsil to a torn triceps early in August, then cycled through replacement options β€” signing veteran D.J. Humphries on Aug. 26 before releasing him on Sept. 11, leaving Brandon Coleman installed at the position. Against a Philadelphia front that has punished this offense before, Daniels took one sack and finished with a 2.9% sack rate. That is a meaningful data point for a team whose entire offseason anxiety revolved around whether the quarterback would survive behind this line.

Sam Cosmi's Week 1 performance drew attention as the stabilizing force up front. If the interior holds, the tackle situation becomes survivable rather than fatal.

The Rookie Class Already Paying Off

Williams ran only 10 routes on 26 offensive snaps and still produced four catches for 64 yards, including the late score. His rookie-of-the-week nomination is less about volume than efficiency. Linebacker Sonny Styles drew a separate grade-out for his first NFL performance. Two rookies contributing immediately is the kind of thing that changes a season's ceiling in a division where margins are two points.

The Dallas Trip Is Bigger Than Week 2

Washington travels to AT&T Stadium on Sunday afternoon to face a Cowboys team that also sits 0-1 after a 28-20 loss to the Giants. Both teams are chasing the same thing: avoiding a two-game hole in a division that already has Philadelphia at 1-0 and the Giants at 1-0.

The profile matchup is genuinely strange. Dallas has moved the ball β€” 395 yards per game and 165 rushing yards per game β€” but allowed 28 points and 244 yards per game. Washington is the reverse: 339 yards and 22 points of offense, 296 yards and 24 points allowed. The market has Dallas as a 3.5-point home favorite with an implied win probability around 67%, and the total sits at 50.5, the highest number either team has seen. That total is an implicit statement that neither defense is trusted.

There's a wrinkle worth flagging. Daniels' career division splits are markedly worse than his overall baseline: five games, 56.6% completion, 671 passing yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions, a 77.2 rating. Division games have been the hardest version of the NFL for him, and this is his third trip through the NFC East gauntlet.

The Bigger Picture

The Commanders' own coaches have been explicit about the theme this week: it's not a one-man job. That message is accurate and also a warning. Daniels returning to health solves the most visible problem, but Washington's path back to contention runs through a rebuilt offensive line, a rushing attack that produced 136 yards in Week 1, and a defense that has to be better than the 26.5 points per game it allowed a year ago.

A loss in Dallas makes it 0-2 with Seattle and Indianapolis coming to Washington. A win resets the season at 1-1 with the hardest road trip already behind them. The difference between those two outcomes is probably one more play than went their way on Sunday.
