Michael Penix Jr. Gets the Ball at Lambeau, and Atlanta's Season Is Already on the Line
The Atlanta Falcons spent two weeks cycling through quarterbacks they never planned to start. On Monday, they finally landed on the one they always wanted. Michael Penix Jr. will make his 2026 debut Thursday night at Lambeau Field against the Green Bay Packers, ending a strange opening stretch in which Atlanta started third-stringer Cooper Rush twice and lost both games.
The timing isn't cosmetic. The Falcons sit 0-2, having been outscored 54-16, and the numbers behind that record are uglier than the scoreboard. Atlanta is averaging 8.0 points per game β worst-case territory β while putting up 282.5 yards per game, split almost evenly between a nonexistent passing game (144.0 yards) and a ground attack (138.5) that has been the only functional part of the operation. The turnover differential sits at minus-3.5. For a team that entered the season with playoff talk attached to it, the floor has already fallen out.
How Atlanta Got Here
Penix missed the first two games recovering from ACL surgery, and the plan around him collapsed in stages. Tua Tagovailoa was named the Week 1 starter on Sept. 7, then didn't play. Rush, who opened the year against Pittsburgh, has been managing his own back issue. Undrafted rookie Jack Strand was the only other available arm in Week 1. The result was a 20-13 loss to the Steelers followed by a 34-3 home dismantling at the hands of Carolina β a game in which the Falcons managed three points in their own building.
That the organization is handing the offense back to Penix on a short week, on the road, against a Packers defense allowing 28.0 points per game, tells you how little it trusts any other option. It also tells you what it thinks of Penix.
What Penix Actually Represents
The sample is small but real. In 2025, Penix completed 166 of 276 passes for 1,982 yards with 9 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions β a profile built on ball security rather than volume. As a rookie in 2024, he went 61-of-105 for 775 yards, 3 touchdowns and 3 picks. He has also shown he'll run, chipping in a rushing score last season.
Ball security is the operative phrase. The 2026 Falcons have been hemorrhaging possessions, and asking Penix to simply not make things worse is a legitimate short-term job description. He returns to a roster that still lists Tagovailoa and Rush behind him, so this isn't a one-week audition as much as a reset of the depth chart's center of gravity.
The Support Structure Has to Show Up
Penix's best friend Thursday is Bijan Robinson. The third-year back carried 16 times for 72 yards and caught three passes in the Carolina loss, marking the 10th time in his last 11 games he's cleared 70 rushing yards. He was the only Atlanta skill player who looked settled through two weeks. If Penix is on a pitch count or rusty early, the run game is the mechanism that keeps the chains moving and keeps the Falcons out of obvious passing downs.
The problems around him are not fixed by a quarterback change. A new coaching staff under Kevin Stefanski inherited a kicking game that failed again in Week 1 with new kicker Nick Folk, who has since appeared on the injury report with abdomen, back and knee issues. The offensive line has been a patchwork of rest days and injuries. None of that gets better because Penix is under center.
What Thursday Means
Green Bay opened as a 5.5-point favorite and the number has moved to -6.5, with the moneyline at -270 and the total sitting at 44.5. The implied win probability for Atlanta is roughly 31 percent β the market is not buying the quarterback change as a cure.
That's a fair read, and it's also the wrong question. The Falcons aren't chasing a Week 3 statement. They're chasing evidence that the offense has a functioning baseline before the schedule turns. Penix doesn't need to win at Lambeau. He needs to look like the answer the franchise has spent two seasons assuming he'd be β because if he doesn't, Atlanta's fall from preseason playoff hopeful to early-season afterthought will have been completed inside three weeks.
