Raiders 35, Saints 27: Cousins' 3 TDs Spoil New Orleans Comeback
The Raiders are 3-0 for the first time in years, and they got there by erasing a 27-16 third-quarter deficit in New Orleans. Kirk Cousins threw three touchdown passes, and Las Vegas outscored the Saints 19-0 the rest of the way to win 35-27 at Caesars Superdome. New Orleans dropped to 1-2.
The game turned on the Saints' inability to close. Two quick third-quarter touchdowns had the home crowd rolling, but the offense stalled from there, and Travis Etienne left early with an apparent hamstring injury โ a blow to a ground game that was already the weaker half of this offense.
How our premium pick graded out
We sold the over on a total that climbed from 43.5 to 44.5, and that was the right read. The teams combined for 62 points, clearing the number by more than two touchdowns. The logic held: New Orleans moves the ball through the air, and a rookie quarterback on the other side of a shootout keeps the scoreboard ticking.
Where we missed was the side. We took New Orleans -3, and the Saints lost outright by eight โ a swing of 11 points against the number. The moneyline on New Orleans also went down. Our projected 25-20 Saints win never materialized; instead the Raiders won by exactly the kind of margin the market's stillness didn't price in.
What it means going forward
The takeaway: a static spread can signal a fair number, but it can also mask a team whose late-game execution doesn't match its yardage. Until New Orleans proves it can protect a fourth-quarter lead, fading the Saints as a favorite is the sharper side. The Raiders, meanwhile, are worth a longer look as a live underdog.
