Kansas City Is 4-0 and Calling Tyreek Hill. That's Not a Contradiction.
Kansas City Is 4-0 and Calling Tyreek Hill. That's Not a Contradiction.
The Kansas City Chiefs are the only undefeated team left in the AFC. They also just spent their bye week working the phones for a 32-year-old receiver who hasn't played a snap since Week 4 of last season.
Both things are true, and together they tell you exactly where this team stands.
What the Raiders game actually cost
Kansas City's 30-27 win at Allegiant Stadium was the kind of result that looks better in the standings than on the injury report. The Chiefs trailed by three at halftime, went scoreless in the third quarter, then exploded for 20 points in the fourth β powered by Kenneth Walker III's 177 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, including a 76-yard run that set up Tyquan Thornton's second touchdown catch of the day.
Then the bill came due. Rashee Rice pulled up on the back of his left leg in the first quarter and was downgraded to doubtful with a hamstring injury. Thornton, who had just authored the best game of his Chiefs tenure, exited later with an ankle injury. Head coach Andy Reid's team moved to 4-0, but it did so with two of its three starting receivers on the sideline.
The room isn't deep enough to absorb this
The season-long numbers make the problem concrete. Rice has 13 catches for 190 yards and a score. Thornton, the most productive of the group, has 13 for 235 and two touchdowns. Xavier Worthy has chipped in 14 for 133 and a score, and Travis Kelce remains the reliable chain-mover at 17 for 254 and two touchdowns.
That's a functional passing game β Patrick Mahomes has thrown for 1,037 yards with nine touchdowns against two interceptions and a 106.2 passer rating, completing 64.1 percent of his throws at 8.1 yards per attempt. But it's functional because of volume distribution, not overwhelming talent. Remove two starters and Mahomes is throwing to a room whose depth chart reads Worthy, Jalen Royals, Nikko Remigio, Cyrus Allen. That's not a group built to survive a month, let alone a playoff push.
Why Hill specifically
The fit isn't just sentimental. Hill was released in mid-February while rehabbing the severe knee injury that ended his 2025 season with Miami in Week 4. He's a free agent, he's familiar with the system, and the Chiefs reportedly reached out to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, with multiple outlets describing the team as "very interested." Rosenhaus has since said a deal could come together within days.
The Chiefs also have 13 days of runway. Week 5 is their bye, and their next game is a Week 6 home date with the Chargers on Oct. 18. That's an unusually clean window to integrate a veteran receiver β or to let Rice and Thornton heal.
The bigger picture
The 4-0 record deserves context. Kansas City is outscoring opponents by 10.2 points per game, averaging 29.5 on offense while allowing 19.2. The pass defense has been the league's stingiest at 131.0 yards per game allowed. But the schedule has been soft β a strength-of-schedule metric of roughly minus-one suggests this start came against lighter competition, which is worth remembering before anyone anoints this team.
The Chiefs are good. They're also thin in the one place where Mahomes has always needed help. A receiver addition wouldn't change the identity of this team β it would protect it.
