Purdy's MVP Surge Has the 49ers 5-0 Again — and a Familiar Warning Attached
The San Francisco 49ers are 5-0 for the first time since 2023, they just won a road game in Seattle against the defending champs' division rival, and their quarterback is tied for the best MVP odds in football. The story of the week, though, isn't the perfect record. It's what happened to the receiving room on the way to 5-0.
The win that made the record matter
San Francisco's 32-29 win over the Seahawks at Lumen Field moved the Niners to 5-0 and 3-0 inside the NFC West. Seattle had closed as roughly a 3-point home favorite with an implied win probability near 62 percent, and the 49ers walked out with the victory anyway. Brock Purdy's line through five games is absurd: 1,196 passing yards, 13 touchdowns against two interceptions, a 69 percent completion rate, 8.4 yards per attempt, and a 119.3 passer rating. He's tied with Josh Allen for the best MVP odds in the league per FanDuel, and that conversation is now a legitimate weekly storyline rather than a hot-take curiosity.
The supporting cast has done its part. Mike Evans leads the receiving corps with 24 catches for 326 yards and three scores. George Kittle has 21 grabs, 268 yards, and four touchdowns. Christian McCaffrey has shouldered the ground game with 286 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 61 carries, plus 19 receptions out of the backfield.
The Deebo Samuel problem
Then there's the cost. Deebo Samuel Sr. pulled up on a non-contact play against Seattle and was ruled out in the third quarter with a hamstring injury. Kyle Shanahan said Samuel "got it pretty good" and will miss "at least a couple of weeks," which puts him on track to return after the bye. That matters, because Samuel had been productive in multiple phases: 16 receptions for 206 yards and three touchdowns, nine carries for 78 yards, and 281 kick-return yards.
Samuel's absence compounds a room that was already thin. Christian Kirk has been out since camp, and San Francisco finished the Seattle game with only three healthy wideouts. The schedule offers no mercy either — the Commanders at home in Week 6, then a trip to Atlanta in Week 7 before the bye.
There's an irony worth flagging. Washington's defense has been generous to pass-catchers all season, surrendering the fourth-most PPR fantasy points to wide receivers and the third-most to tight ends through five games. Even shorthanded, a Purdy-led passing game with Kittle and Evans has a soft landing spot in front of it.
The 2023 ghost
Here's the part 49ers fans won't enjoy reading. The last time this franchise started 5-0, in 2023, it promptly lost three straight. The roster makeup invited that conversation this week, and the coaching staff has clearly heard it. The difference this time is the defense, which is allowing just 18.6 points per game while the offense averages 30.8 — a plus-12.2 scoring margin that dwarfs anything the team leaned on during its 2023 stumble.
That defense could also get a boost. Nick Bosa, sidelined three consecutive games with a calf injury, has been targeting a Week 6 return. An official injury report for this week isn't available yet, so nothing there is settled.
What to watch
The 5-0 record is real, and so is the MVP case behind it. But the 49ers are now asking Purdy to keep operating at this level with a depleted receiver room and two games standing between them and the bye. If they survive that stretch intact, the 2023 comparison dies quietly. If they don't, the warning label writes itself.
