Bo Nix Has a 79.4 Passer Rating and a 4-2 Record. Only One of Those Is Built to Last.

The Denver Broncos are 4-2 and, depending on which corner of the internet you read, either Super Bowl contenders or the luckiest team in the AFC. Thursday night's 17-14 overtime win over Seattle somehow supported both arguments at once.

The defense forced three punts, recovered a fumble, sacked Sam Darnold five times and intercepted him twice β€” the last by Ja'Quan McMillian in overtime, setting up Wil Lutz's 53-yard winner. That unit did all of it with a banged-up secondary: Talanoa Hufanga is out with an ankle injury, Riley Moss is questionable with ribs, and Pat Surtain II's absence is baked into the power rankings as a 1.2-point injury dock.

Bo Nix, meanwhile, went 17-of-27 for 107 yards. No touchdowns, no interceptions, a 71.1 passer rating. It was the second straight week he threw for 123 yards or fewer.

Fitzpatrick Said the Quiet Part Out Loud

Ryan Fitzpatrick's postgame critique β€” that Nix's play was "almost disrespectful to the quarterback position" β€” landed hard because the box scores keep agreeing with him. Nix sits at 1,049 yards, six touchdowns, three picks and a 79.4 rating on 5.5 yards per attempt. His completion percentage over expectation is minus-3.65%, and he's averaging just 5.75 intended air yards per throw.

That tracks with the season-long shape of the offense:

  • 19.0 points per game scored, against 20.8 allowed
  • 259.0 total yards per game β€” fourth-fewest in the league, ahead of only Miami, Tennessee and Minnesota
  • 174.8 passing yards per game and 84.2 rushing yards per game at 3.4 yards a carry
  • 32.5% on third down
  • 11 explosive plays all season, tied for second-fewest in the NFL

The receiving corps hasn't provided a floor either. Jaylen Waddle leads the group with 22 catches for 228 yards and a touchdown, but his weekly log reads 2, 138, 10, 35, 19, 24 β€” one explosion in Week 2 and very little since, including a shoulder scare Thursday that he returned from. Courtland Sutton has 13 catches for 123 yards. J.K. Dobbins has plowed through 81 carries for 270 yards.

The Defense Is the Whole Margin

Denver's 18 sacks rank tied for third in the league. The Broncos have seven interceptions, six forced fumbles and a plus-4 turnover differential. Zach Allen has 4.5 sacks, Nik Bonitto 3.5, and McMillian has chipped in two sacks plus the overtime pick. Over the last three games that group is allowing 18.3 points and 341.7 yards.

Strip that away and the profile thins out fast. The offense is averaging 235.3 yards over the same three-game window, minus-0.09 EPA per play, and a negative yardage differential of more than 100 yards per game. Denver's 4-2 was earned against a genuine gauntlet β€” Kansas City, Jacksonville, the Rams, San Francisco, the Chargers, Seattle β€” but it was earned almost entirely on one side of the ball.

Arizona Is the Test That Actually Matters

Week 7 takes the Broncos to State Farm Stadium to face a 2-4 Cardinals team allowing 29.7 points and 368.2 yards per game, riding a WLLLL stretch with Jacoby Brissett (66.7%, 1,328 yards, 9 TD, 6 INT) under center and three safeties on the injury report. The market has Denver at -4.5 with a 43.5 total and roughly a 70% implied win probability β€” the friendliest spot on the schedule so far.

That's precisely why it's revealing. Nix's road splits are ugly: 468 yards, three touchdowns, one interception and a minus-12.0 completion percentage over expectation across three away games, versus 581 yards and a minus-0.9 CPOE at home. In his one dome appearance he threw for 123 yards on 27 attempts. If the passing game can't function against a defense giving up nearly 30 a game, the "how long can this hold?" question stops being a talking point and becomes the season's central problem.

The Broncos don't need Nix to be great. They need him to be more than a passenger. Six weeks in, that's still an open question β€” and the record is doing a lot of work hiding it.
