The Falcons Forced Four Turnovers and Beat a 6-0 Team — Now Comes the Hard Part

Atlanta's 29-20 win over San Francisco on Sunday was the kind of result that gets filed under "any given Sunday" if you only glance at the scoreboard. Four takeaways, the 49ers' first loss of the season, and the Falcons' first home victory after three straight defeats at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. But the more interesting question isn't how Atlanta beat a 6-0 team. It's whether the thing that made it possible is repeatable.

The Defense Did Something It Hadn't Done All Year

On Sunday the Falcons picked off Brock Purdy twice and jumped on two more loose balls — including one forced out of George Kittle and another from Kaelon Black. That is the entire story of the afternoon. Atlanta entered the week with a minus-3 turnover differential and a defense that had generated 56 quarterback hits but far too few short fields, and it spent three hours flipping that profile on its head.

The timing matters. This week's news cycle also brought word that the defense is getting healthier, with Kendal Daniels back in the fold. Add Za'Darius Smith and Nnamaka Ebukam to the questionable list for Sunday and there's a credible case that the current staff has more bodies to rotate up front than it did in September.

Michael Penix Is No Longer a Question Mark

The loudest takeaway of the week is the one about the quarterback, and it's earned. Penix finished Sunday 25-of-34 for 213 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, a 118.9 passer rating. On the season: 66.7 percent completions, 1,157 yards, nine touchdowns against one interception, and a 109.1 rating. That is not a game manager's line. That is a second-year starter who has stopped giving games away.

What changed Sunday was support. Atlanta had spent five weeks asking Penix to be efficient while the run game and defense left him in third-and-long. Against San Francisco, Bijan Robinson carried 20 times for 63 yards and added five catches for 59 more, Drake London worked underneath, and Penix's 73.5 percent completion rate came with an average time to throw of 2.5 seconds — quick, decisive, on schedule. The offense's last five games now sit at 31.0 points per game with a plus-7.2 differential.

The Ceiling Is Real. The Floors Are Still There.

Here's the uncomfortable part. Atlanta is 3-4, not 5-2, because the same team that just toppled an undefeated opponent also lost by 31 to Carolina and dropped winnable home games to Baltimore and Chicago. The home/road split is genuinely strange: 1-3 with a minus-37 point differential in Atlanta, 2-1 with a plus-35 differential on the road.

Sunday's injury report explains some of the inconsistency and threatens to extend it. Brian Robinson is out with a hamstring, thinning the backfield behind Bijan. Divine Deablo is out at linebacker, and Michael Jerrell is down on the offensive line. A cluster of cornerbacks — Avieon Terrell, C.J. Henderson, Aundell Terrell — are questionable, which is not the depth chart you want against a divisional opponent with something to prove.

What Sunday in Tampa Actually Means

The Falcons sit 3-4 in the NFC South, a game behind Carolina and level in the loss column with nobody. A trip to Raymond James Stadium on November 1 is the definition of a trap: Tampa Bay is 2-5 and scoring just 23.1 points per game, but the Buccaneers are allowing 21.6 and have been the better defense by yardage all season. Baker Mayfield has taken 22 sacks at a 17.1 percent rate and is on the injury report, with Emeka Egbuka and Antoine Winfield already out — a pass rush that just produced four takeaways has an obvious target.

The Falcons' power rating climbed to 16th this week, up a full point, and the underlying five-game form says that's still conservative. One upset doesn't erase a 3-4 record. But it does prove this team has a winning formula: protect the ball, run it 25 times, and let the defense hunt takeaways. The next six weeks are about whether Atlanta can find that formula twice in a row.
