Six Straight Losses, Zero Changes: The Eagles' Quarterback Question Has No Answer
Six Straight Losses, Zero Changes: The Eagles' Quarterback Question Has No Answer
The Philadelphia Eagles have lost six consecutive games, sit at 2-6, and rank 30th in the NFL in scoring. On Monday, one day after a 27-10 primetime flop in Landover, Nick Sirianni was asked whether anything would change. His answer: nothing. Tanner McKee remains the starting quarterback, Sean Mannion remains the play-caller. "I'm not making any changes there," Sirianni said.
That non-answer is the story of the week in Philadelphia, because it's the clearest admission of what this season has become. The Eagles aren't fixing a problem โ they're riding out a season that was effectively ended by one.
The Hurts Reality
Everything traces back to Jalen Hurts, who will likely miss the remainder of 2026 after multiple blood clots were found in his lungs. The detail that shook the league: Hurts played a game hours after being diagnosed with a clot. His season ends with 933 passing yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions across five games โ modest numbers on a team that was already wobbling, but a canyon away from what's replaced him.
Tanner McKee has completed 63.2 percent of his passes for 638 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, a 76.6 passer rating, and a 5.6 yards-per-attempt average that reflects an offense with no vertical threat. Most damning is the 23 sacks and 16.8 percent sack rate. McKee has been under siege, and the Eagles' passing EPA of -37.8 ranks among the five worst in football. The Eagles are 37.3 percent on third down.
No Help Coming From the Supporting Cast
The injury report explains part of the pressure. DeVonta Smith (hamstring), Dontayvion Wicks (ankle) and Britain Covey (knee) are all out at receiver, with linebacker Jihaad Campbell and safety Jonathan Jones also unavailable. That's a 4.5-point injury adjustment by our internal rating, and it shows up in the tape.
Saquon Barkley returned from a hamstring issue against Dallas and managed 62 yards on nine touches; he's at 274 rushing yards on 56 attempts for the year and still doesn't look right. He addressed the locker room after the Cowboys loss with a "never quit, never give up" message โ admirable, and also a tell about where the room is.
The defense, long the identity under Vic Fangio, has collapsed alongside it: 26.6 points and 406.2 yards allowed per game over the last five, the worst stretch of Fangio's Philadelphia tenure by the film-room accounts.
What Sunday Actually Looks Like
The New York Giants (4-2-1, plus-0.3 point differential) visit Lincoln Financial Field with J.J. McCarthy at quarterback. The market has installed the Giants as roughly 3-point road favorites, with their moneyline carrying about a 64 percent implied probability โ a striking reversal for a home Eagles team that opened the season beating Washington.
The underlying numbers agree with the market. Our rating has Philadelphia dead last at No. 32, down another 1.6 points this week to -12.7, with a -10.2 margin and -141.4 yardage differential over the last five games. Last week's rating already sat 8 points below the market price, and the market has kept moving toward reality.
The Bigger Question
Sirianni's defenders point to a 2027 case: two Super Bowl trips, a championship in 2025, and a roster gutted by a medical emergency no coach can scheme around. The counterargument is that the staff has had six weeks to build something functional around McKee and hasn't โ and that owner Jeffrey Lurie, honored at halftime last Monday amid a spiraling season, now faces a genuinely uncomfortable evaluation.
The Eagles' playoff hopes are effectively gone. What's left to decide is whether standing still at quarterback and coordinator is patience or paralysis. Sunday against a winning Giants team won't settle it alone, but it will make the answer harder to dodge.
