NFL Power Rankings Week 2: 49ers, Patriots Surge at the Top as Jaguars, Seahawks Slide

The Lead

Two weeks into the 2026 NFL season, the top of my board has a distinctly new look. San Francisco sits at No. 1 with an 11.69 neutral-field rating, up 2.96 points week-over-week, and they're outpacing the market by 2.68 โ€” a strong buy signal. Right behind them, New England has vaulted to No. 2 with a 10.53 rating, a 2.95-point jump despite a 1-1 record. The 49ers and Patriots are the only teams north of 10, and both are trending up sharply.

Meanwhile, the previous top teams are sliding. Jacksonville, last week's No. 1, dropped 3.30 rating points and fell to No. 4. Seattle, which was No. 2, plummeted 5.28 points and now sits at No. 5. The message is clear: the numbers are catching up to the film, and the market is starting to adjust.

The Top Five

1. San Francisco 49ers (11.69, +2.96 wk, 2-0, SOS -0.09) โ€” The 49ers are the class of the league by my numbers, and they're doing it against a neutral schedule. Their rating jumped nearly three points this week, and they're outpacing the market by 2.68, meaning they should be laying more points than a typical spread implies. The last five games back it up: 31.0 points scored per game. This is a team that's not just winning โ€” it's dominating.

2. New England Patriots (10.53, +2.95 wk, 1-1, SOS 6.52) โ€” Don't let the 1-1 record fool you. New England grades out as the No. 2 team in the league, and that rating jumped 2.95 points off last week. The profile is defense-driven: 8.0 points allowed per game over the last five with a plus-7.0 point differential. The offense is still a work in progress, but the defense is elite, and the schedule has been tough (SOS 6.52). This is a legit contender.

3. Los Angeles Rams (10.00, +1.53 wk, 1-1, SOS 4.54) โ€” The Rams sit third with a 10.00 rating, up 1.53 from last week, and they have no injury dock โ€” a clean bill of health. But the profile is a bit hollow: 17.5 points per game over the last five with just a plus-1.0 point differential. The rating says they're elite; the scoring margin says they're average. Something has to give.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars (8.31, -3.30 wk, 1-1, SOS -2.45) โ€” Jacksonville still grades as the No. 4 team, but that rating fell 3.30 points in a week, and their -2.45 strength of schedule suggests the mark was built against soft competition. The market is pricing them 5.13 points better than my number, so this is a clear sell. The Jaguars are good, but they're not as good as their record might suggest.

5. Seattle Seahawks (6.75, -5.28 wk, 2-0, SOS 3.11) โ€” Seattle's 6.75 rating is inflated relative to its on-field profile, having cratered 5.28 points in a week. The defense's 8.5 points allowed over the last five games is doing unsustainable heavy lifting alongside a modest 22.0 offensive output. The market's 0.78-point edge toward Seattle is a sell signal. The Seahawks are 2-0, but the numbers say they're pretenders.

Risers and Fallers

The biggest riser by rating change is Carolina, up a whopping 4.28 points to -0.84. The Panthers are basically average right now, and their last five games tell a wild story: 35.5 points per game on offense but 31.0 allowed. They're fun, but volatile. Las Vegas also jumped 3.72 points to -5.49, and their last-five profile is legit: 26.5 points scored, just 13.5 allowed. The market is catching on, but there's still value.

On the flip side, Seattle (-5.28) and Houston (-5.75) are the biggest fallers. The Texans have cratered to -0.20, down 5.75 points in a week, and their last five games show 18.5 points scored against 28.0 allowed. With key injuries piling up, they're a mess. Washington also dropped 5.20 points to -11.20, and their defense is hemorrhaging 30.5 points per game over the last five. The bottom is falling out in D.C.

How the Board Sets Up

Keep an eye on Buffalo (No. 6, 5.99, +0.93 wk). Their offense is rolling at 38.5 points per game over the last five, but the defense is bleeding 31.0. If the defense tightens up, they could crack the top three. Chicago (No. 7, 5.66, +1.50 wk) is a buy โ€” the market is pricing them 0.84 points below my number, and they have a plus-8.0 point differential over the last five. Minnesota (No. 8, 5.35, +0.72 wk) is legit at 2-0 with a plus-11.5 point differential and just 12.5 points allowed per game. And Kansas City (No. 9, 2.12, +2.58 wk) is climbing fast, but their defense allowing 20.0 per game is a concern.

The Bottom Line

The numbers don't lie: San Francisco and New England are the real deal, while Jacksonville and Seattle are due for regression. The market is starting to adjust, but there's still value to be found. Trust the ratings, not the records. That's how you stay ahead of the game.
