NFL Power Rankings Week 5: Jacksonville Holds No. 1 as the Baltimore Bottom Falls Out
The Ledger Doesn't Care About Your Vibes
Five weeks in, and the top of the board is stubborn. Jacksonville stays at No. 1 with a 10.46 neutral-field rating, San Francisco is still right behind at 7.98, and the entire top five โ JAX, SF, SEA, LAR, KC โ held its positions from a week ago. That's rare this early, and it tells you the model likes what it's seen.
What it doesn't like is the middle and bottom of the league. Baltimore fell 7.46 rating points in a single week, the sharpest drop on the board. Green Bay jumped 7.29 points โ the biggest gain โ and still only sits 17th. Denver lost 3.01 and Houston somehow gained 3.34 while sitting at 1-4. This is a week where the numbers got loud, so let's read them.
The Top Five
1. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-1, rating 10.46, -2.88 wk, SOS 1.85). The Jaguars stay No. 1, but the margin is thinning. Their rating dropped 2.88 points this week, the second-largest decline among the top five. What keeps them here is the underlying profile: 24.6 points scored against 14.0 allowed over the last five, a plus-10.6 differential, and a 0.249 EPA edge per play. That rating is still 7.66 points clear of the market, which means the books are pricing Jacksonville like a good-but-not-great team. I'm not.
2. San Francisco 49ers (5-0, rating 7.98, -0.78 wk, SOS -0.75). The 49ers are 5-0 and still lost ground, down 0.78 points. The offense is humming at 30.8 points per game with a plus-0.29 EPA per play, and the market is actually 4.33 points above my number โ the books are pricing them higher than the model. That's a warning sign, not a compliment. The rating already accounts for a soft schedule, and the defensive attrition is baked in. San Francisco is very good. The spread may not be.
3. Seattle Seahawks (3-2, rating 4.81, +0.53 wk, SOS -0.85). Seattle is the quiet riser in the top five, up 0.53 points despite a 3-2 record. That record is better than it looks โ the strength of schedule sits at -0.849, and the market is pricing them about 1.25 points short of my number. This is a team the books haven't fully bought. The model has.
4. Los Angeles Rams (2-3, rating 4.43, -1.29 wk, SOS 2.45). The Rams are 2-3 and ranked fourth, which sounds absurd until you see the 2.45 strength of schedule and a -0.2 point differential over the last five. They lost 1.29 rating points this week, and the market is 1.87 points worse on them than my number. At 4.43, they'd be roughly a 4.5-point favorite on a neutral field. The record says panic. The schedule says patience.
5. Kansas City Chiefs (4-0, rating 4.14, -0.89 wk, SOS -2.60). Kansas City is undefeated and sliding. The rating dropped 0.89 points, and the market is pricing them about a point better than my model. The 4-0 record is propped up by a -2.60 schedule and a prior-season rating of -2.919 that the model still weighs. I'm selling KC at current spreads. The wins are real. The price is not.
Risers and Fallers
Start with the fallers, because Baltimore is the story. The Ravens dropped 7.46 rating points โ the biggest one-week decline on the board โ and fell to 23rd despite a 4-1 record. The market is pricing them 10.9 points better than my number, which screams sell. Books are clinging to the record and last year's rating while ignoring what's actually on tape.
Denver fell 3.01 points to 11th, and the -1.46 vs-market gap says the public is still pricing them closer to their 3.037 prior-season rating than their current form. Indianapolis cratered 3.935 points to 19th. The Giants lost 3.874 and sit 20th at 3-1-1 โ fool's gold built on a -5.259 schedule.
On the other side, Green Bay's 7.29-point jump is the headliner. The Packers are 17th at -1.037, and the -3.58 vs-market mark says the number is already shaded against them. Houston gained 3.34 points despite sitting 1-4, which tells you the model is reacting to something the record isn't showing. The Jets added 3.53 and their plus-0.058 EPA per play over the last five suggests they're better than 2-3.
How the Board Sets Up
Carolina (9th, rating 1.86, +1.03 wk). The Panthers are the clearest buy in the league โ the market is pricing them 6.07 points worse than my number, and they've posted 30.25 points per game with a positive EPA differential over the last five. A soft 0.285 schedule ahead means the rating has room to climb.
Cincinnati (10th, rating 0.89, -0.69 wk). The Bengals already eat a 2.2-point injury dock, and the rating dropped 0.69 this week. The offense is still at 25.6 points per game with a positive EPA differential, so the number is holding. Watch whether the market keeps fading them.
New England (7th, rating 3.71, +1.38 wk). The Patriots gained 1.38 points against a brutal 4.34 schedule, but the market is 5.19 points better on them than my number. That's a sell, and the secondary injuries are already baked in.
Pittsburgh (14th, rating -0.24, +2.48 wk). The Steelers jumped 2.48 points and the market is catching up fast. The underlying profile is mediocre โ 22.2 scored against 21.8 allowed โ so this is a spot to fade if the number keeps climbing.
The Bottom Line
The top of the board is stable and the middle is chaos. Jacksonville holds No. 1, but the 2.88-point weekly drop says the gap is closing. San Francisco is undefeated and overpriced. Seattle and Carolina are the buys. Baltimore is the sell of the week, and anyone quoting that 4-1 record as a reason to back the Ravens hasn't looked at the rating. That's the whole job. Numbers over narratives, every week.
