Jazz Edge Pelicans 120-119 in Friday Night Thriller

The Utah Jazz escaped Delta Center with a 120-119 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night, but the one-point margin told a different story than the one we bet on. Utah improved to 1-1 while New Orleans stayed winless, and the game played out as a back-and-forth affair that came down to the final possession.

Our premium pick centered on two numbers: Jazz -2.5 and Under 239.5. The total got there. The game finished at 239 combined points, a half-point under the line, and the Under 239.5 ticket cashed by the narrowest possible margin. That's the kind of result that rewards the process even when it's uncomfortable to sweat.

The spread did not. Utah won by a single point at the final horn, well short of the 2.5-point cushion we needed, so the Jazz -2.5 play lost. The model projected a 117.6-115.1 Utah scoreline, and while the winner was right, the margin never approached that projection. A one-possession game was always the risk with a short home spread, and it landed on the wrong side of the number.

What does it mean going forward? Early-season totals remain volatile when two defenses have barely any film to evaluate, but this result reinforces that selling short on totals in October games can work when the number sits above what either defense has earned. Short home spreads, though, deserve more caution when the matchup projects as a one-possession game. We'll carry both lessons into the next slate.
