Anthony Edwards Is Out Two Months. Minnesota's No. 3 Net Rating Is About to Be Audited
The Minnesota Timberwolves spent the first week of the season looking like one of the NBA's most complete teams. Then the news dropped: Anthony Edwards would undergo an arthroscopic procedure for debridement on his right knee at the Mayo Clinic, sidelining him for up to two months. The team announced the surgery was successful. The schedule does not care.
That's the story of the week in Minnesota, and it's a story with real teeth because of how the Wolves had been winning. Through eight games they sit 5-3, scoring 119.0 points per game while allowing 107.6 β a plus-11.4 differential that has produced the league's third-best net rating at 13.1, trailing only Memphis (18.0) and Houston (13.3). Over their last ten games they've posted a 14.1 net rating with a 120.8 offensive rating. That's the profile of a team that had answers.
What They Just Lost
Edwards played four games and averaged 33.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 0.8 blocks in 33.8 minutes, shooting 48.1 percent from the floor and 40.0 percent from three. His last appearance was a 47-point explosion on 19-of-34 shooting in an overtime loss at Cleveland. The knee issue traces back to the "runner's knee" that bothered him last season, which is why the two-month timeline reads more like a floor than a guess.
The Fill-In Committee Has Been Real β So Far
The encouraging part: Minnesota has already played four games without him and gone 2-2, with wins over the Clippers (127-101) and Bucks (112-100) and losses to Golden State and San Antonio. The supporting cast hasn't collapsed.
- LaMelo Ball is averaging 16.9 points and 5.9 assists on 26.2 minutes, and his 34-point night against Milwaukee showed the ceiling. The floor showed up too: 10 points on 2-of-10 shooting with five turnovers in the Spurs loss, and seven turnovers against Cleveland.
- Jaden McDaniels has been the stabilizer β 16.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 52.8 percent shooting across eight starts.
- Ayo Dosunmu is the biggest surprise at 15.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists while hitting 41.9 percent from deep, including 27 points and nine rebounds in San Antonio.
- Jonathan Kuminga (12.2 points, 44.1 percent from three) and Joan Beringer (6.5 points, 6.9 rebounds in 18.1 minutes) have absorbed frontcourt minutes.
That's a functional offense. It is not a 120-offensive-rating offense.
The Gobert Problem Is Now a Crisis
Rudy Gobert's numbers are the quiet emergency: 7.4 points on 42.5 percent shooting and 43.9 percent from the free-throw line, including a combined 0-for-13 stretch that drew public scrutiny from Chris Finch and, per reporting, frustration from teammates. He followed a 1-point, 0-of-4 night against Golden State with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Milwaukee β but went 4-of-12 at the line. With Edwards gone, Minnesota no longer has the perimeter gravity to hide a center who can't convert near the rim.
What the Next Eight Weeks Actually Decide
The immediate schedule is unforgiving: a road trip to Houston (7-1, 13.3 net rating, 122.8 offensive rating) and New Orleans, then home dates with Utah, Dallas, Chicago and a Portland team off to a 5-1 start. The West isn't waiting β the Rockets are 7-1, Memphis 6-1, Oklahoma City 5-2 and Portland 5-1.
Minnesota's margin was always thinner than the net rating suggested. NBA general managers voted the Wolves among the league's best teams and among its most uncertain, which now reads like prophecy. Surviving two months without a 33-point scorer doesn't require someone to replace Edwards. It requires Ball to stop turning it over, Gobert to finish the looks he's given, and a bench that has answered the call early to keep answering it into December. If they hold near .500, the season is intact. If the defense β already wobbling at 123.7 points allowed per 100 possessions in the head-to-head comparison with Houston β drifts, the hole gets deep fast.
