Heat Edge Clippers 117-116; Our Spread Pick Misses, Under Cashes

The Miami Heat escaped Intuit Dome with a 117-116 win over the LA Clippers on Wednesday, dropping Los Angeles to its seventh straight loss. The Clippers entered at 1-6 and on a five-game skid, and they couldn't close out a game they led late. Miami rallied to pull ahead and held on for the one-point decision.

How our pick graded out

We backed the Clippers on the moneyline at +166, and that play went down when Los Angeles lost outright. The spread side of the card also missed: we laid the Heat at -4.5, and a one-point Miami win doesn't come close to covering. The total was the one bright spot. We called for the under on a 233.5 line, and the game finished at 233 combined points, under the number.

So the card came in one of three, with the under as the only hit.

What it means going forward

This one stings because the game script was close to what we expected โ€” we saw a tight, low-scoring affair, and the under delivered on that read. But a tight game is exactly what kills a favorite laying 4.5, and that's the risk we took backing Miami to win comfortably against a desperate home team. The Clippers' dysfunction is real, and their price hasn't caught up to their performance, which is why the moneyline loss doesn't surprise us. What we'll carry forward: when we project a near pick'em, we shouldn't turn around and lay points with either side. The under was the cleaner expression of that view, and it's the only part of the card that paid.
